There now exists a multitude of intra-oral scanners,
tooth movement software, 3D printers, aligner
plastics, and Vacuform machines to choose from.
It is possible to create a system using a number of
combinations and be successful. Since I began with
the original Orchestrate 3D system, I have evolved
to utilizing Park Dental Research materials and
printers since the two companies merged last year.
PT: How many different staff are involved?
MN: There has been quite an evolution in staffing
and equipment of our 3D lab. In 2010, the desktop
scanner, industrial printer, and early O3D software
were all very complicated and labor intensive. Being
fascinated by this new technology, I adopted it
initially as a hobby and performed the scanning,
software processing, and tooth movement myself.
As we incorporated the system into patient care, I
trained a couple of RDAs to perform the scanning
and printing during lulls in patient treatment. I
trained and hired my daughter who was away at
college to perform the software processing remotely.
The turnaround time was around one week. This
was not efficient or sustainable. Today we have an
independent 3D lab in each of our offices.
My primary practice is in Fountain Valley, California,
where I see patients three days per week, rotating
availability. We have a satellite office in the resort
community of Lake Arrowhead, California, where we
work six to eight days per month. In Fountain Valley,
we have one RDA who processes files and 3D prints
models four days per week. She helps chairside as
needed with aligner patients approximately 20% of
her time. I have a lab tech who works three to four
days per week, dependent on demand, fabricating
and packaging all aligners and passive appliances.
In our Lake Arrowhead satellite office, we use our
existing two RDAs to process, 3D print, fabricate,
