A.T. Still University (ATSU) in Mesa, Arizona, has
a worldwide reputation for its multidisciplinary
health care education. Founded in 1892, the
school has a rich history of providing leadership
and comprehensive health care skills while
instilling a sense of compassion so that students
acquire hands-on experience addressing the
needs of the whole person. The school has been
ranked in the U.S. News & World Report's guide to
America's best graduate schools.
Among the graduate health care programs at
ATSU, the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health
(ASDOH) was founded in 2003. The school has a
three-part mission statement: to educate caring,
technologically adept dentists who become community
and educational leaders serving those in
need, and to be the leader in the lifelong education
of community- responsive general dentists; to prepare
graduates with a strong foundation of critical
inquiry, evidence-based practice, research, cultural
competency, an orientation to the prevention, and
interdisciplinary health care experiences; and to
promote the delivery of optimal patient care and
the transfer of newly acquired knowledge, skills, and
technology to the profession and the community.
The Postgraduate Orthodontic Program at ASDOH
(ASDOH-POP) is Arizona's only postgraduate
orthodontic program that is fully accredited by
the Council on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the
American Dental Association. When the program
was inaugurated in 2007, the program length was
26 months and accepted four residents in each
class. In October 2012, ASDOH-POP proposed that
the program be increased to 30 months and that
both a master's degree in orthodontics and an
orthodontic certificate be offered. In the winter of
2013, this proposal was approved by CODA, and
ASDOH-POP started to enroll five residents in each
class. The program underwent two CODA site visits,
and both received " approval without reporting
requirements " in 2014 and 2022.
By including biological and clinical sciences education,
the program is designed to prepare students
to treat a wide range of orthodontic problems,
including craniofacial anomalies, such as cleft lip
