Updates From the AAO Annual
Session
When you dance, your purpose is not to
get to a certain place on the floor. It's to
enjoy each step along the way.

Board of Trustees
The 2023 Annual Session descended upon the
Windy City in April. This Chicago meeting was
the first meeting that was fully planned by the
Committee on Conferences (CCON). CCON was
formed by the House of Delegates back in 2020
with the intent to have a standing committee for
conference-planning continuity. PCSO's own
Dr. Lili Horton was the inaugural chair of this new
conference-planning committee. This was also the
debut of the new attendee paths at the Annual
Session. These paths allowed members to find
tracks and schedules to follow during the Annual
Session based on their personalities, needs, and
interests. The paths included scientific advances,
clinical techniques, inspiration and well-being,
business success, innovation and tech talk,
engage and connect, and exhibit hall. I am excited
to see how these paths continue to play out in our
schedules next year at the Annual Session in New
Orleans.
In the post-Annual Session attendee survey,
the top four reasons that respondents gave for
attending the meeting were to expand their
knowledge and skills, obtain continuing education
credits, catch up with friends and colleagues, and
to see new products and innovation. The survey
also showed that 95% of doctors and 97.8% of
team members felt that the Annual Session met or
exceeded their expectations. They agreed that the
meeting was very well organized-a successful
first step for the attendee paths. Attendees
enjoyed being in close proximity to not only their
colleagues from all over the globe but also some
orthodontic legends. I know that, personally,
I enjoyed being able to finally meet Dr. Larry
Andrews in person. This year had its first military
tribute in the exhibit hall, which also honored
President Dr. Norm Nagel with a custom challenger
coin. In addition, respondents noted the fun
social events such as alumni receptions and the
celebration featuring Relapse, along with the meeting
kickoff by the keynote speaker, Neil Pasricha,
who asked the question: Does success lead to
happiness? Or does happiness lead to success?
During the Annual Session, our very own Dr.
Norm Nagel concluded his successful term as AAO
president, capping off an extensive volunteer and
leadership career in various professional organizations.
Over the past year, he has continued to push
the Board of Trustees and the Association forward
with his desire to reimagine our organization while
continuing to align ourselves within the framework
of our core values in the current strategic plan. The
PCSO and the AAO cannot thank Norm enough for
all his hard work on our profession's behalf. At the
House of Delegates, Dr. Myron Guymon was sworn
in as Dr. Nagel's successor, while Dr. Kenneth Webb
(NESO trustee) and Dr. Enrique Cruz (trustee-atlarge)
also began their terms on the Board.
Congratulations Dr. Norm Nagel on your presidential
year!
