able under both the 1090ES and 978 UAT standards; FIS-B is only available to aircraft carrying 978 UAT equipment. Getting In Although the 2020 deadline for ADS-B equipage is still a ways off, it’s not likely to go away. Plus, the longer you wait, the fewer scheduling options you may have when planning the necessary downtime. That’s because thousands of your peers – other aircraft owners – also are waiting. You don’t want to be surprised at the last minute and be forced to compete with your hangar neighbors for valuable time in the avionics shop. In other words, now is a good time to be firming your plans and working with your avionics shop, not only to choose the right equipment, but also to schedule the installation. Of course, one of the reasons owners may be delaying purchase and installation decisions is thanks to what many perceive as a lack of options in new equipment, upgrades to existing avionics and improvements in the ways all this hardware works and plays with each other. While those concerns may have been valid as recently as last year, a growing number of products are being brought to market and may entice you to upgrade your avionics stack. Already, several are available using a proprietary portable display or Apple’s increasingly ubiquitous iPad, plus Android devices. For example, a portable solution is available from Sporty’s, the Stratus, which is a 978 UAT receiver providing only FIS-B. It receives the FIS-B data and broadcasts it in the aircraft via Wi-Fi to an iPad using the ForeFlight application. Soon, it’s likely other products providing some mix of ADS-B In-only capability or a full, In/Out 978 UAT solution will be available. If you want a single box to comply with the ADS-B Out mandate and display ADS-B In data on panel-mounted avionics, one solution might be Garmin’s GDL-90, which is a 978 UAT transceiver and includes an internal WAAS GPS sensor that can feed other devices with highly accurate positioning information. According to Garmin, the GDL-90 is designed to interface with the company’s GMX 200 multifunction display and other devices. Other single-box solutions include products from FreeFlight Systems and Trig. FreeFlight Systems’ RANGR line of 978 UAT transceivers comes either with or without an internal GPS receiver and in versions suitable for both certified and experimental aircraft. Meanwhile, Trig’s TA60-series products provide an ADS-B In-compatible 1090ES receiver, and can present TIS-B traffic data on Aspen, Avidyne and Garmin, and most other ARINC 735 compatible displays, plus handhelds like the Garmin 496 and 696. Both FreeFlight Systems’ RANGR products and Garmin’s GDL-90 provide ARINC 429 and RS-232 outputs. Sandia Aerospace offers the ADC 7-35-01, an installed box designed to bring ADS-B Out to aircraft equipped with Collins TDR94D transponders and Garmin 400W/500W navigators. In addition to providing the interface from onboard GPS receivers to Mode S transponders using the 1090ES standard, Sandia’s 7-35-01 also is a full-function air-data computer.
