residents in a warm, friendly way, cannot show caring for those
older adults. They are not demonstrating hospitality skills. It is
recognized that showing hospitality to residents helps promote
good nutrition, better digestion, reduces unintentional weight
loss, and curbs dehydration. Kindness will be paired with care
services as communities expand their onsite capabilities in
promoting resident wellness. Once trained, it is truly easy to
greet a resident with a generous disposition that automatically
lifts that person's spirit. These instances are all particular to

emotions impact the older adults they serve. Food servers extend
person-centered care when they extend hospitality, and that is
providing good health care.
Food servers must have additional skills such as sincerely
listening to residents' thoughts, answering their questions, and
keeping them updated on local happenings. When serving
meals, they show caring for each person by using these social
skills. Attentive listening adds to the well-being of the person
they are communicating with at that very moment. Using the
resident's name in conversations and the food server sharing
their own name creates a personal connection that shows they
care enough to make that seemingly small effort. Each food
server sets the ambiance at mealtime, whether it is in the dining
room or serving individually to the resident's room.
This close relationship, when it includes empathy between the
server and resident, conveys that your food serving team is the
most valuable asset in your company. It is where residents receive
the greatest satisfaction of their day that repeats three to five
times daily. The well-trained food server extends hospitality
in these ways as it builds community that encourages your
residents to feel special because they are special. Is there a
