INTERVIEWING...AGAIN OR STILL?
a list of 'STAR' questions will garner
a much better result than 'yes' and
'no' questions, it still comes across as
a very formal way of interviewing.
I've found that candidates are much
more forthcoming and real with their
responses when you can turn the
interview into a conversation.
One of my favorite techniques is to
ask a candidate to describe a typical
day at their current or last job. As
they make their way through their
duties, I stop and ask them something
more specific about how they go
about a task they mentioned. Then
I inquire about something that may
happen that is unusual. For example,
if they are talking about putting away
stock from a delivery, I might ask,
" What do you do if you realize you
were shipped the wrong product?
Who do you communicate that to?
What if it's a product that is needed
immediately and you don't have
time to get a substitute? How do your
residents respond when that happens? "
Instead of just asking question after
question, I pick a situation they have
volunteered and follow that trail with
some hypotheticals to satisfy the 'STAR'
outcomes. I remember at the end of one
interview the candidate said, " Was that
it? That didn't feel like an interview.
It just felt as if we were having a
conversation. "
Have Patience
The hardest thing to do is to hire
slowly. We want so desperately to get
the gaps in our schedules filled as

quickly as possible. We want to quit
putting that extra pressure on our
teams and picking up tasks within our
department. But we also know that
hiring too quickly could keep us in
this incessant loop of hiring, training,
not compatible, terminating, then
starting the process all over again. If
you're lucky enough in this time to be
getting resumes, celebrate! In some
places, no applications are rolling in at
all. So if you have applicants, you are

ahead of the game! I like to set small
time frames. When my ad opens and
resumes start arriving, I decide on
a period of time to collect resumes.
After reviewing them, I call back the
better prospects for interviews. I set
a definite period of time to conduct
the interviews. Taking notes on all
the interviews is critical so that I can
remember which candidate said what,
and which candidate made a good
impression. I try to take at least one full
