CLOSE YOUR EYES. Imagine you have just moved into a facility because you are no longer able to fully
care for yourself. You have been losing weight as your appetite decreased due to the fear and anxiety of
leaving your home. It is your first day and no one has asked you about your food preferences. You do not
want to go to the dining room for the evening meal. When your meal arrives, a colorful welcome note
from the dietary manager is included, along with an invitation to a party for new residents. To your
surprise, the meal is your favorite soup and sandwich. How did they know? Did they really take the time to
talk to my family about my favorite foods? With a smile and a few tears, you start eating your meal. Maybe
this won't be so bad after all.
SMALL GESTURES, BIG IMPACTS!
What a difference the dietary
manager and staff can make for
residents. A few creative, thoughtful
gestures can change a person's day.
Often in the hustle and bustle of
everyday work challenges, we forget
the importance of the actual dining
experience in the prevention of
malnutrition. The Pioneer Network's
" New Dining Practice Standards "
stress that interventions for
malnutrition should always focus on
food before offering supplements. The
Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
states that individualized nutritional
approaches including using the least
restrictive diets possible is necessary
to the quality of life of older adults.
Both the Pioneer Network and
Academy are great resources to utilize
for ideas on improving the dining
experience.

Weight loss and malnutrition are
unfortunately common in long-term
care facilities. According to Arensburg,
malnutrition affects approximately
35-50 percent of residents in longterm
care facilities. Aging often brings
the loss of independence. One of the
many ways we can help our residents
maintain some independence and
prevent malnutrition is by improving
dining and focusing on individual
