be clearly labeled and must identify
food allergens in the product. More
recently, in January 2021, the Food
Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education,
and Research (FASTER) Act added
sesame to the list. The FASTER Act
also added more surveillance to
track prevalence, diagnostic testing
development, prevention activities
to delay the onset of food allergies, to
identify how to reduce risks for those
living with food allergies, as well as the
development of new therapeutics to
prevent, treat, manage, and potentially
cure food allergies. Learn more on the

REALIGNMENT #4 :
Addition of Sesame
As noted above, the FASTER Act of
2021 updated allergen labeling laws to
include sesame as the ninth leading
food allergy in the United States. If
you have foods manufactured prior to
January 2023 in your facility, sesame
may be present since it did not have
to be declared previously. If you are
unsure about the presence of sesame
in a food, best practice is to reach
out to the manufacturer to inquire.
Remember, food products that were
already in the marketplace were not
required to be removed or relabeled to
be compliant with the new legislation.

REALIGNMENT #5 :
Nine Food Allergens
Food allergies can be caused by any
available food. It is interesting to note
that there are different major food
allergens lists in different countries
and regions of the world. In the
United States, however, ~90 percent
of food allergy reactions are caused by
nine foods, according to FARE. These
include milk, egg, peanuts, tree nuts,
soy, wheat, fish, shellfish, and
sesame. Interestingly, 40 percent
of individuals with a food allergy
are allergic to more than one food.

exhaustive.
#9 Sesame: Approximately
700,000 Americans have been
diagnosed with a sesame allergy
and this allergy has significantly
increased worldwide (Warren et al.,
2019). Sesame is the edible seed
of the sesame plant. The seeds
are widely used in global cuisines
and these cuisines have gained
popularity in the past decade in the
United States. Often sesame can
be found on or in a bread product,
as part of a cereal/granola mix, as
sesame oil in a favorite Asian dish,
