OR
MANY YEARS AGO, when I began
my leadership journey, accepted
management styles resembled " Mr.
Boss in the corner office " -seldom
seen, often feared, and seemingly
itching to hand out a dreaded pink slip
at the slightest infraction. Accepted?
Yes. Effective? Maybe.
Those were the times of endless
applicants and a steady stream of
high school graduates eager to earn a
paycheck, whether they were enrolled
in higher education or not. And
yet, teams still struggled. A lack of
training resources and high turnover
as employees sought even slight
increases in compensation, meant
that frontline managers were always
scrambling, just as they are today.
Is there a solution? Was there ever?
The answer is a resounding " yes " -and
it is as close as the nearest mirror.
The adage that " people don't leave
positions; they leave bosses " still rings

LEADERSHIP STYLE TO BUILD
A WINNING TEAM

exactly what their complaint entails.
It puts responsibility back onto the
aggrieved party and relieves you of
initial involvement. Then, look for
solutions that include policy instead of
disciplinary action.
different shifts and days of the week
overlap. How many times do people
complain that the department/
management/leadership fails to
communicate to everyone, and most
importantly them. Flip the switch.
Make communication a two-way
street, where responsibility is on the
associate to review whiteboards and
touch base with supervisors. A best
practice is a large month-at-a-glance
prominently placed, with important
dates highlighted for all to see. Never
miss an audit or catering event again.
REMEMBER THE " E " WORDS
Empower. Engage. Enable. All great
things begin when you step back and
give your people the ability to take
the baton and run with it. Spend your
time providing the tools and materials,
rather than using them. While some
employees may not be ready for the
responsibility, you can always position
them to work in groups with those
