able to see back to a Christmas
party thrown by Mr. Fezziwig,
his first boss. Fezziwig was not
concerned solely with money,
as Scrooge was, and simply
wants his employees and their
sweethearts to have a good
time. The Ghost of Christmas
Past remarks to Scrooge, now
giddy at the sight of his former
employer, " He has spent but
a few pounds of your mortal
money: three or four perhaps.
Is that so much that he
deserves this praise? " Scrooge
then replies, " It isn't that,
Spirit. He has the power to
render us happy or unhappy;
to make our service light or
burdensome; a pleasure or a
toil. Say that his power lies in
words and looks; in things so
slight and insignificant that it
is impossible to add and count
them up: what then? The
happiness he gives, is quite as
great as if it cost a fortune. "
It is easy to forget the power
we have as bosses, especially as
we oftentimes feel powerless
over product shortages,
client demands, etc. We can
call ourselves " leaders " or
" directors " or " managers, "
but to our employees, we are
" the boss. " By simply talking
to our team members, we can
break down all the negative
connotations associated with
" boss. "
Think back to when you
were just starting out as a
dishwasher or server or barista.
Think about the butterflies
you felt when the boss called
you to the office. Remember
how bad you felt if you messed
something up. Now, think
about how good it felt when
you were praised. Recall the
loyalty you felt if the boss
offered you an opportunity
to learn something new, be in
charge of a fresh initiative, or,
best of all, a pay raise!
If you are reading this,
you started somewhere
lower than where
you find yourself
now. Good bosses
helped you along
the way. Good
bosses can develop
positive culture
by developing
positive people. E
IF WE RECOGNIZE SOMEONE AS A HIGH
PERFORMER, then we should do everything possible
to develop that person into being a better employee,
leader, and citizen.
