WesternU DO and DPM students collaborate at PCHAT clinic
PCHAT Foot and Ankle Clinic's first event since COVID-19
took place on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at God's Pantry in
Pomona with Dr. Rebecca Moellmer as the clinic preceptor
and 10 passionate first and second year podiatric medical
students. It was an interprofessional event where podiatric
medical students through the PCHAT Foot and Ankle clinic
worked collaboratively with osteopathic medical students of
general PCHAT clinic.
The morning consisted of transporting supplies and setting
up the make-shift clinic. Patients were lined up before
students even arrived outside of God's Pantry to receive
the free health screenings and free food provided by God's
Pantry. The clinic flow entailed patients registering and
getting their vitals checked at the intake station to their first
health screening of the day at general PCHAT clinic. From
there, patients were directed to the Foot and Ankle Clinic
where foot and ankle examinations were conducted, and
podiatric medical students assessed vascularity, neurological
symptoms, musculoskeletal pain, and dermatology.
Depending on the patient's chief complaint, the clinic was
able to provide treatments like debridement, compression
16
wrapping, clipping nails, foot inserts, clotrimazole creams,
and more. At the end of the encounter, podiatric medical
students provided the patients with educational handouts of
a variety of topics ranging from diabetic foot care, plantar
fasciitis, ingrown toenails, footwear recommendations, and
more. Patients were also given a foot care package that
included new, clean socks collected during CPMA's Holiday
Sock Drive for the Needy last December, a loofah, and
moisturizer. If a patient needed any referrals, we had a list of
free medical clinics on hand that would accept our patients.
Pouya Tebyanian, a second-year podiatric medical student,
reflected about his time volunteering at the clinic, " These
hands-on learning opportunities are very fulfilling and
reaffirms the significant value of podiatric medicine. I was
fortunate enough to serve the underserved community of
Pomona with foot and ankle screenings alongside learning
about different examination techniques and pathologies
of lower extremities. I'd like to show my appreciation to
Rameesha Asif-Sattar, who was in charge of putting this
opportunity together for us, and Dr. Moellmer, who took time
out of her day and spent it with us to supervise our clinic. "
