Temple's Class of 2025 Shoe-Drive

As I rushed to get ready to meet with student government leaders, I ran to put on my shoes and drive to
school. When I got to the meeting, I was told one consistent thing about my job as the class
of 2025 Vice President: " Your job will be to raise money for your class's Senior Ball and
Match Day Celebration. "
This sounded easy at first. Then I started questioning the ethics of raising money. If
I'm supposed to be a future doctor, which is a job built on the aspect of giving,
how do I maximize profits without making others feel ripped off? Do I sell
something cheap for a higher price? How much up-charging can I get away
with, knowing that most of my classmates are taking out student loans?
I brought these questions and concerns with me to our first class council
team dinner. Danica Pratta, the class of 2025 APMSA Delegate, posed
the idea of donating shoes in-return for profit. I learned that she worked
with an organization called Funds2Org, a non-profit organization
that donates gently worn or new shoes to members in developing
countries. Through working with them in the past, Danica was
able to not only raise funds to go on a mission trip to deliver
medical care to underserved communities, but she was
also given the opportunity to help underserved
communities acquire a seemingly mundane item
that I take for granted on a daily basis.
After the meeting that night, I thought
about how seemingly easy it is to reach our
neighborhoods in Philadelphia. Here, we
have access to public transportation and
cars, but most importantly shoes. While
in developing countries, communities have
to sometimes walk 5-10 miles to obtain water
and food or go to school. Furthermore,
