A: Besides being a sad Virginia Tech sports fan, my favorite
pastime is photography! It is a recent hobby that I picked
up when I went to Iceland a few months ago. I have had
tremendous net positives from having a camera. I was able to
photograph my best friend's engagement party (when their
photographer bailed) and also provide my classmates with
professional headshots after our white coat ceremony.
The point I am hoping to make, however, is that you should
never feel bad to indulge in something that contributes
positively to your life. In my case, getting a camera added a
lot of net positives to my life. If there's something that you
know would contribute positively to your life and make you a
happier person (and thus happier student), then go for it! Life is
too short to not be able to do the things we would like to.
Q: Dear Big Sibling, what is one lesser-known study
tool that you could not live without?
A: Dear Little, I love this question! My favorite lesser-known
study tool is a feature that is packed into the Notability app on
the iPad (and available on Mac computers as well). It is called,
" tape. " After I import all of my lecture PowerPoint decks into
the Notability app, the tape feature allows you to put a piece
of " tape " over certain words or concepts and quiz yourself.
If you tap on the tape it reveals the hidden word. It is a great
way to memorize key words/concepts. I use it all the time,
especially for the classes where we had to memorize various
drug mechanisms (for example). Give it a shot sometime!
