students made a positive impact on their legislators. Dr.
Boike noted, " It's been eight years in the making and the
purpose was to decrease the debt burden for students. Until
now we were the only students who did not get a subsidy.
It became a priority to inform the legislators of what we
do. To me, getting the word out and involving the students
was the biggest help in swaying the legislators. They like to
see students benefiting from what they are doing. As much
as we could talk to them it was the students who made
the difference. " He continued, " This is the reason to get
involved in advocacy. It can benefit you and the people who
follow you. "
Unfortunately, student applications are continuing to
decline nationwide, but having in-state tuition available for
Ohio residents will be advantageous for those considering
a career in podiatry. Advocacy is a recruiting tool for our
future generation. In terms of advancing podiatry, reducing
tuition at KSUCPM is a win for prospective students and
the future of podiatry.
When it comes to national issues that are affecting
podiatrists and their communities, students can get involved
and learn more about these issues at both the American
Podiatric Medical Student Association's (APMSA) website
and the American Podiatric Medical Association's (APMA)
advocacy website. There, students can find summaries
of bills affecting the field of podiatry and learn about
ways that they can support advocacy. " APMA and its
affiliated state podiatric medical associations are the only
organizations lobbying for podiatrists and their patients on
Capitol Hill and in statehouses across the country, " said
Mathy. " I urge all students to join for free to gain access to
the latest state and national advocacy information. Our job
is to make it easy for you to find out what is going on and
preserve, protect, and advance podiatry. "
APMA Board of Trustees to Visit Podiatric Medical Schools
This fall, your APMA Board of Trustees will be visiting 10 of the schools of podiatric medicine to speak with
students (a visit to Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Podiatric Medicine is in the works!).
These informal presentations will include professional insights from experienced podiatrists who are leaders
within the profession, as well as information on how APMA can support you throughout your podiatry career.
