A Close Dissection of the
Centralized Residency
Interview Program
By: Julia Tolin, TUSPM Class of 2023
The Centralized Residency Program Interview (CRIP) is
one of the most exciting and defining periods of your career
as a podiatric medical student. Now that I am speaking
as a student who has recently completed interviews, I
think that your mentality going into them is imperative.
It is daunting, certainly, and that is not something that I
would ever deny. That being said, feeling confident in your
preparation, the impression you have made as an extern
at these programs, and being self-aware is key to your
success during interviews. Be proud that you have made it
to fourth year, be proud that you are nearly finished (if not
already finished) with clerkships, and most importantly, be
proud that you are months away from becoming a resident
and taking on a primary role in managing the health of
another human being. Although there is no single best way
to prepare for interviews, as there is significant variability
in each program and how they choose to structure their
interview, there are three key elements that all students
should prepare for to do well: case reviews, rapid fire,
and social/ethical questions. Every single interview I
had included these three elements in some combination. I
have also had friends who had strictly academic interviews
without social questions and vice versa. Preparing for
social and ethical questions is crucial and often overlooked;
however, these questions are often your opportunity to
distinguish yourself from fellow applicants and allow the
interviewers to understand more about your core values and
who you are as a person, not just a student and potential
