Surgeons of Tomorrow: A
Reflection by the Inaugural
Winners of the ABFAS
Scholarship Contest

Last fall, the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery
(ABFAS) launched its newest student outreach program:
the " Surgeons of Tomorrow " 2022 Student Conference
Scholarship Contest, which would fully fund two podiatric
medical students to attend the Annual Scientific Conference
hosted by the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons
(ACFAS ASC). The winners were chosen among entrants
SPRING 2023
from each of the nation's ten podiatric universities, who
submitted videos and essays articulating why ABFAS Board
Certification is important to them as aspiring podiatric
surgeons, and how they will use it to benefit their patients.
Ultimately, the ABFAS judges awarded scholarships to one
essay writer and one video entrant: Faith Carelli, a secondyear
student at Des Moines University, and Remi Drake,
a first-year at the Arizona College of Podiatric Medicine,
respectively. As the Student Liaison to ABFAS, I had the
honor to interview Remi and Faith for this profile, covering
