she set. Through her training as a resident and discussions
with her mentors, she knew that she wanted to help train
future podiatrists and guide the next generation of foot and
ankle surgeons. So, when the opportunity arose, it was easy
for her to stay in Minnesota and act as a faculty member of
podiatric surgery at Hennepin Healthcare.
Dr. Brett's advice is instrumental for every student who
is wondering how their involvement in leadership roles
could benefit them as a resident and a physician. Every
student will be presented with opportunities such as visiting
conferences, interacting with physicians, and increasing
their awareness of the inner workings of the field. Dr.
Brett encourages every student to take advantage of each
opportunity presented to them, look for mentors, and be a
mentor when they are able.
The biggest drive behind Dr. Brett's achievements was her
motivation to continually step out of her comfort zone and
constantly learn new skills. The influential people, surgeons,
and podiatrists whom she has connected with throughout
her career helped shape her current path in podiatric
medicine and surgery. Dr. Brett remarked that she admires
the new generation of podiatric physicians and students
who own who they are as foot and ankle specialists.
Speaking with Dr. Brett was a refreshing reminder of the
benefits of student involvement in leadership roles. While
both of us agreed that the primary goal of every student
should be focusing on their classes and clinical experiences,
I was encouraged by Dr. Brett's journey to continue seeking
opportunities that push me outside of my comfort zone,
further develop relationships with mentors, and be a future
mentor to others in the same way that Dr. Brett and so
many others have.
