''Prevention begets correction'' - Dr. Louis DeCaro
Can you share a bit about your background and what
led you to pursue a career in podiatric medicine?
I was a junior in college at Stony Brook University
when I received my MCAT scores and did quite well.
That same summer, I got a letter from Barry University
in Miami, Florida, asking if I had ever considered a
career in podiatric medicine. I had been living at home
throughout college and saw this as a great opportunity.
Barry University flew me down to Miami, where
I met with Chet Evans, the dean at the time, who
16
became a mentor to me. He interviewed me, offered
me a position, and three weeks later, I was in podiatry
school. It was exciting to live in Miami and work toward
becoming a doctor, which had always been a goal of
mine. Podiatry offered me a lifestyle that balanced
practicing medicine and surgery and eventually
specializing in kids.
What were some of the highlights of your journey
while in podiatric medical school and your surgical
residency?
Living alone for the first time in Miami was a highlight.
I studied on the beach, played golf, and helped coach
the undergrad tennis team because I played college
tennis. I was also involved in the theater department at
Barry University and had a role in " The Foreigner " by
Larry Shue during my freshman year. It was challenging
to juggle studies and extracurriculars but looking back,
it was very rewarding. In podiatry school, I became
the APMSA delegate, an APMA liaison, and won the
Student Leadership Award. My surgical residency
at Worcester Medical Center in Massachusetts was
also pivotal, providing comprehensive training and
solidifying my interest in pediatric podiatry.
