need. " In the Guatemalan clinics, students worked with one
of the few providers in this country that focuses on preventing
amputation and fostering limb-salvaging techniques.
After clinic hours, students gathered for case discussions led
by Dr. Cicchinelli, where he highlighted the etiology and
biomechanics of many of the ulcerations they witnessed.
One student highlighted their experiences during these
discussions stating, " The differences in treatment styles
compared to the US were particularly fascinating. " Dr.
Cicchinelli emphasized various ways to treat conditions
with limited resources, both in the Guatemalan clinics and
in the United States. Furthermore, case discussions were
used to provide insight into real challenges and understand
differential diagnosis, emphasizing key aspects of conditions
that give clues towards the proper treatment protocols.
With renewed determination and a deeper understanding
of their role as future healthcare providers, these podiatric
students returned home, carrying with them the lessons
learned and the profound impact during their time in
Guatemala. This inaugural trip was more than a medical
service opportunity; it was a powerful reminder of the
importance of empathy, education, and cross-cultural
collaboration in the pursuit of a healthier world for all.
