Dr. Brett stated
that rather than
overpowering her own
voice, being an APMSA
President allowed her
to lead and empower
others' voices within the
house of delegates.
The installment of Kristen Brett as the APMSA President.
Her time as a delegate and president also cultivated
essential skills for applying to and interviewing at
residencies. Dr. Brett had already been developing her
public speaking and social skills through her different roles
within APMSA. Those skills, in addition to the invaluable
advice and connections she cultivated from her peers,
allowed her to build her confidence during interviews. They
also helped when she drafted her CV. Most interestingly,
they provided her the necessary knowledge to address the
current issues within podiatry as a student. Dr. Brett stated
that her involvement with APMSA was invaluable to her
professional development and growth.
Dr. Brett was then faced with another crossroad in her
career after she finished her surgical residency training. Dr.
Brett needed to choose a career path as a foot and ankle
surgeon. Like her time as a fourth-year student completing
clerkships, Dr. Brett utilized the knowledge her mentors
provided to guide her career choices. Her mentors had been
instrumental in helping her choose a residency program
that would give her the best training based on the priorities
