Footnotes - Winter 2024 - 22
In October, the TUSPM AAWP executive board attended
the national AAWP Conference in Alexandria, Virginia. It
was a great way to begin getting involved in this organization
at a national level and catch a glimpse at what life is like after
graduating. For many members of the executive board, this
was our first conference and a great one to start with. Many
of the lectures covered topics centralized to women including
pregnancy, how the female body changes postpartum, and the
female athlete triad. We were able to learn about these topics
more in-depth compared to what is covered in didactic classes.
We also had the pleasure of hearing different opinions from
the attendees on how they would manage various cases. One
of my personal favorite events of the program was a bonfire
and smores social which took place the last night before the
conference ended. It was a laid back yet intimate atmosphere
in which all the attendees enthusiastically answered all our
questions about clerkships and residency.
Many of them also shared stories from when they were
students, as well as advice for the future when we are
searching for jobs. Attending this conference helped all of us
answer many personal questions that cannot be answered by
upperclassmen and gain a different perspective from a wide
variety of individuals who have gone through the same steps
of their careers that we are about to embark on.
Beginning the Professionalism lecture series has really helped
our third-year students prepare and help them navigate the
next steps in their careers. We also have had the pleasure of
working with Dr. Sabrina Minhas to establish an atmosphere
at our school where female students can go to one another as
well as the female faculty to uplift and inspire one another.
Some future events we plan on holding are an introductory
sewing class and women's golf class; an interview etiquette
and professional attire round table talk; and a lecture about
professional communication in the workplace. We hope this
lecture series continues to help students present themselves
positively and professionally in the field and hope to pass this
lecture series along to the future executive board.
