Raissa: What is your best advice for young women
in podiatry and prospective students who plan to
enter our field?
Dr. Kenney: I highly recommend saying yes to every
learning opportunity in school and residency. I particularly
recommend involving yourself in procedures outside of
podiatry as opportunities are slim that you will get this
access after residency. For example, if a thoracic surgeon
was putting in a pacemaker and you have never seen this
done, I recommend staying after the end of your day to
assist in understanding what is involved with this procedure.
This sometimes means late nights, weekends, or missing
a game of pickleball... but it is well worth it. My patients
love that I have knowledge of their surgical experiences in
other places and that I have a good grasp of their internal
medical issues. Also, push to get those board exams taken
while you have more stamina and a less busy life. I deferred
getting married for a year just so I could focus on my
surgical boards.
Dr. Kenney is an amazing inspiration for future generations
of physicians. She currently continues to support the
community and students at SMU-CPM as one of the
attending physicians for the SMU-CPM free clinic in
Berkeley CA and is an active member of the Contra Costa
County Podiatric Honor Society.
