CONNECTIONS:
MEET DR. LELAND JAFFE

What student doesn't want to meet their professor, let alone a
professor who has returned to their alma mater? Dr. Leland Jaffe,
DPM, FACFAS, CWSP, earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from
the Scholl College of Podiatric medicine at Rosalind Franklin
University of Medicine and Science, trained at the North Chicago VA
Medical Center and St. Joseph Hospital, began his career at a group
practice in St. Louis, MO, continued as a surgical instructor at the
DePaul Health Center residency program, and is now the Associate
Dean of Clerkship and Residency Placement at the Scholl College of
Podiatric Medicine. He graciously agreed to meet for an interview with
APMSA to discuss his recent rise in Instagram popularity and provide
advice to students as a podiatric professor.
Putting his all-too-late arrival at reading the " Harry Potter " series with
his daughter aside, Dr. Jaffe is a personable professor. Dr. Jaffe
discussed his love for classics like " Good Will Hunting " and inspiring
reads like " Becoming " by Michelle Obama, " Born to Run " by
Christopher McDougall, and " Can't Hurt Me " by David Goggins. These
works offered Dr. Jaffe new and persistent sources of motivation and
inspiration. On top of everything he has accomplished, Dr. Jaffe has
undertaken the task of re-learning Spanish. The decision was partly a
response to the significant population of Spanish-speaking individuals
in Chicago. That, in addition to the numerous Spanish-speaking
clinicians who have offered their aid, made it a prime time to take up
the mantle once more. In all of his efforts, Dr. Jaffe tries to fill his time
learning different tools to better serve his community.
When asked about why he chose to be a professor, Dr. Jaffe
attributed it to wanting to remain connected to podiatric students and
residents. He has had a teaching role ever since he was a chief
resident at the North Chicago VA Medical Center and St. Joseph
Hospital.
