here are numerous types of geosynthetics, including geotextiles, geomembranes,
geogrids, geosynthetic clay liners, drainage materials, geocells
and erosion control products. Each has its own applications.
Geotextiles are used for separation, reinforcement, filtration, drainage and
protection. Geomembranes are utilized for containment, lining and capping.
Geogrids are exploited for reinforcement, asphalt overlay, waterproofing,
separation and stabilization. Geosynthetic clay liners are applied for surface
impoundment, secondary containment and landfill lining. Drainage materials
are wielded for drainage. Geocells are employed for improving the structural
and functional behavior of soils and aggregate infill materials. Erosion control
products handle erosion protection.
With so many applications in a wide variety of materials, it's a wonder
that these products can fit into a single category called geosynthetics. They all
qualify, though, because they all are in the earth (geo) and are human-made
(synthetics). And, conveniently, all these applications are represented here in
this annual Geosynthetics Specifier's Guide.
The range of these applications also justify three arms of the Advanced
Textiles Association (ATA) in Geosynthetics magazine, the Geosynthetic
Materials Association (GMA) and geosynthetics conferences.
Geosynthetics magazine
Geosynthetics is an international, bimonthly publication for civil engineers,
contractors, geosynthetic companies and government agencies in need of
expert information on geosynthetic engineering solutions. The magazine offers
articles from field professionals showing innovative, exemplary practice. The

Geosynthetic Materials Association
The Geosynthetic Materials Association (GMA) serves its member companies,
advancing geosynthetics knowledge on many fronts. The association develops
technical standards; partners with federal agencies; advocates for geosynthetics
on local, state and national levels; and supports educational programming

Geosynthetics conferences
The geosynthetics world will gather in Kansas City, Mo. Feb. 5-8, 2023, for the colocated
Geosynthetics Conference 2023 and the International Erosion Control
Association (IECA) Annual Conference. Over the years, ATA's geosynthetics
conference has become a world-class gathering place for ideas, innovation and
