Central Alaska is quite arid, having a
yearly average precipitation of 10.8 inches
(27.4 cm), of which 6.5 inches (16.5 cm)
is snowfall equivalent water precipitation.
With such a low amount of precipitation,
stormwater management concerns within
the diked containment area are minimized.
This allows the use of manually
activated self-priming pumps with intake
below a water surface. All drainage is to a
single point within the open three-tank
diked area.
While much of the geomembrane
installation was completed in late summer,
there were components that were
finalized in more extreme weather. Some
final connections, including some piping
supports, were sealed with standard
mechanical battens. Final anchoring to
the perimeter trench was also completed
in colder temperatures. The ability to bend
the geomembrane to 180 degrees provided
for faster and more reliable installation
in temperatures well below freezing.
Additionally, the lack of overburden made
completing the connections easier and
more visible. With laboratory cold crack
testing showing passage at -65° F (-54° C),
routine movement directly on the liner
will give greater assurance of long-term
survivability. As direct loading on a geomembrane
induces a three-dimensional
bend, many properties are needed, including
seam strength equal to parent material,
high puncture strength, high tensile
strength and of course the ability to bend
at extreme low temperatures and recover
without cracking or other damage.
Crowley officially began operation
of the Moose Creek facility in February
2022. As is the case with other similar
facilities in arctic environments, the geomembrane
installation is expected to provide
spill containment, low maintenance
and long-term survivability in extreme
environmental conditions. G
