Installation
The general contractor, HPM, hired
Western Concrete-a Colorado-based
excavation contractor-to strip and
stockpile the native sand and begin
constructing the new lagoons. After the
first of three lagoons was finished and
the perimeter anchor trench was dug,
Liner installation began at the site. A
few thousand sandbags were filled and
staged for use as temporary ballast to
anchor the liner in the perimeter trench
and along the panel edges within the
lagoon. Then the gas venting system
was laid out. One foot (30.48 cm) wide
geocomposite vent strips with a 300-mil
(7.6 mm) HDPE geonet inner core acting
as a flow conduit laminated on both
sides with a 4-ounce (113-g) nonwoven
geotextile filter fabric to prevent clogging
was installed on a grid 45 feet (13.7
m) on center, as shown in Figure 5a.
Over the next six weeks installation
took place. The first lagoon was
installed in nine days. The liner crew
took a week off, allowing Western to
finish building the second lagoon,
which was then installed in eight days.
Five days later the final lagoon was
built, and Simbeck mobilized a third
time to complete the installation, with
the final lagoon taking only seven days.
In the end, a total of 126 panels were
methodically deployed and welded into
place, as shown on the panel layout
drawing (Figure 4), taking a total of
21 full workdays netting out weather
delays. Average daily production rates
came to 96,000 square feet or 2-plus
acres (8,919 m2 or 0.8 h) per day. Detail
work and quality assurance/quality
control (QA/QC) steps entailed another
two days. Nine pipe boots and 192 air/
gas vents were installed, and 53 repairs
or patches were needed, for an average
of 1.5 repairs per acre (0.4 h). Wind
and rain caused a cumulative delay of
seven days.
