event, while inadequate or badly conceived lighting can
drag down its entire vibe.
Research shows lighting can have a signiicant impact
on people's moods, which is why some of the most
effective planners custom-design lighting to match the
ambience they're trying to achieve.
" Producing an event involves a lot of moving pieces-
furniture, linens, drapery, lighting, audiovisual, looring
and, of course, assorted decor pieces, " notes Wedding IQ
editor Kevin Dennis at Specialevents.com. " Lighting in
particular has a way of transforming a space before all
those other factors fall into place. The style of lighting
has the power to create the vibe and ambience of an
event space. ... Even the most beautiful tablescapes will
shrink under poor lighting settings but can lourish with
the right mood lighting. "
To learn what's trending in the world of tent lighting
today, we spoke with some of the top movers and shakers
in the industry.

At DesignLight Co., based in Dover, Mass., vice president
of sales and marketing Sandy Mulrey has noticed two distinct
tent lighting trends: very formal and elegant versus a
nature-oriented look that features bamboo lanterns.
The formal look often pairs crystal globes with crystal
chandeliers and twinkle strings, while the bamboo look
frequently incorporates greens to tie in the loral designs
found in everything from bouquets to tabletop centerpieces
to tent ceilings. Many clients like to see their lighting adjusted
from soft, candlelit tones in early evening to color-changing
light as the night progresses and activities increase.
Another popular way of offering visual appeal to tent
settings, she notes, is projection lighting (aka gobos)
that displays stock images or custom patterns onto
walls or dance loors.
