Advancements in staging
Given the labor shortage, flooring and
staging manufacturers have changed
the design of their products in the last
few years to make it easier to install with
fewer people.
Going back to ground protective flooring
in particular, Stoken points to one
of the biggest manufacturers, Signature
Systems, which has simplified flooring
installations with its OmniDeck product.
" It is lightweight and can connect in any
direction, so you're able to install ground
protection flooring much faster with fewer
numbers of crew. It's really an incredible
system, " Stoken says.
And as Bancroft Potter, owner of Groove
Surfaces LLC in Portsmouth, N.H., a custom
flooring company for outdoor events, explains,
manufacturers are always looking
for ways to reduce the weight and increase

black and white checkers. In addition,
long blade landscape turf is another
newer option.
" It looks very much like real grass and
decorators have been using it to complement
their floral designs, " McKee says.
" Natural seagrass or sisal flooring is also
being used at some higher-end weddings.
And another upgrade option is a
plush-style carpet instead of the entrylevel
turf. "
MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING
or floor covering such as carpet, turf and vinyl,
Cory Stoken, partner and chief operating officer
at FloorEXP Inc., recommends always cleaning the
flooring before rolling and storing. If it does get wet,
make sure to let it dry out before storing; otherwise, it
will start to grow mold. Also, FloorEXP always tries to
roll it as tightly and neatly as possible, the same way
companies receive it. That will ensure the floor covering
does not get wrinkles and creases during storage.
When it comes to staging, Nghi Nguyen, product
manager at Wenger Corp., says just like any other

product, it needs regular maintenance to ensure
its safety, functionality and longevity. " The specific
maintenance requirements may vary based on factors
such as frequency of use and environmental conditions, "
Nguyen says. " At a minimum, it is imperative that each
stage is visually inspected and is wiped down before
and after each use. " Particular attention should be given
to key safety components, such as structural integrity,
leveling feet, trip hazards, connectors and fasteners,
and surface condition, which must be inspected and, if
necessary, promptly repaired or taken out of service.

" For example, Mark Cerasi at Dura-Trac
manufactures a beam system which replaces
the old 4-by-6 wooden method
with a lightweight composite beam. It's a
great elevated flooring option, " Potter says.
" At Groove Surfaces, we have developed a
panelized finish floor system which eliminates
the waste incurred by using rollout
vinyl. Our panels can be re-rented for years
as opposed to vinyl products which get
thrown in a dumpster after one use. "
