"Always listen for unusual noises in production
equipment. Remember that other than crushers and
shredders, almost nothing in a plant is designed for
impact loading. And the forces from an impact load
are tremendous. For example, a 12-in.-long, 3/16-in.dia. rod could easily support a 500-lb. weight. But if
that 500-lb. weight needs to drop just 1 in., the support
rod would need to have a diameter of 2 1/2 in."
