Relative to individual investors, institutional investors have had a multi-decade head start
regarding alternative investments. Their size and scale have allowed them to efficiently
invest across multiple risk premia and generate attractive risk-adjusted returns for their
constituents over multiple economic regimes.
Today, institutional investors remain as important as ever, representing large pools of longterm
capital that are used to fund pension schemes, support academic institutions, and
even play a role in monetary and fiscal policies in some of the most developed economies.
However, the role of the individual investor's relationship with capital markets has grown
in significance, coming to the table with over a $150 trillion household net worth1
equates to the wealth of all institutions globally.2

converted into financial assets, the individual brings a lot more to the table despite having
relatively low allocations to alternative investments.
