The Catalyst Review October 2024 - 3
HOT TOPICS
International:
● BP Changes Strategy- BP has announced it will reinstall an oil production goal of 2MIL+ BPSD production until 2030, while
increasing upstream capital expenditure to support production. At the same time, the new CEO (ex CFO) stated that in
addition to increased financial discipline, the company will target higher earnings that will be used to increase shareholder
returns amid concern over its lower stock pricing. This seems to follow several other major IOC announcements to focus
more on energy production and security, rather than energy transition projects.
● Geopolitical Instability Major Concern- While CEOs remain cautiously optimistic moving into 2025, the majority are
expressing increased concern about the global economic instability. This appears to be a combination of the UkraineRussia
conflict continuing, along with escalation within the Middle East, but also the struggling Chinese domestic
economy. Recent stimulus by the Chinese government seems to have ceased with no lasting affects addressing the lack
of consumer demand increase. Housing and provincial debt still seem to be major stumbling blocks.
● Transportation Fuels Demand is Cloudy- OPEC+ seems to be struggling in maintaining the demand for crude oil and
there has been disagreement between IEA and their projections. OPEC+ sems to think this is due to shadow crudes being
produced and consumed that they can't track but we know China import for crudes has been down significantly. Some
of this might be explained by increased EV penetration, reduced diesel transport activities, but this mismatch has also
raised the question of whether something else like overall peaking might be involved sooner rather than later. The jury is
still out on this one.
