SPECIAL FEATURE
10. SUMMARY
1. Reaching net-zero CO2
targets calls for significant changes in the ways electricity is produced, and we have seen movements in that
direction. It is also widely accepted that hydrogen made by electrolysis has the potential to achieve deep decarbonization of various
industry activities. The cost of renewable power is a key barrier for water electrolysis technology.
2. Electrolysis of water and RWGS are becoming important future technologies to provide hydrogen and oxygen as key by-product.
3. The production of SNG via electrolysis is technically feasible, but it will probably not be economically attractive for most countries.
4. Methanol from H2
5. Ethanol production from H2
and CO2 may become viable if SRM/ATR technology from Natural Gas will not be practiced anymore because Green
House Gas reduction initiatives will be required. It has been proposed to produce essentially green methanol from coal using H2
made from water electrolysis.
6. From an efficiency point of view, an e-battery car is more desirable than a hydrogen car. Both options have pros and cons, and it is not
clear yet what the future will be for both systems.
7. Small scale modular nuclear reactors (SMR) are carbon emission free and considered to be intrinsically safe. SMRs have the potential to
supply increased stability and security for the supply of electricity power alongside other sources including renewables. Debating whether
the cost of one source of energy is more commercially practical than another does little to guarantee long term survival of life on our
planet.
8. It is recommended to increase investments in clean energy if we want to win the war against global warming.
