Cultural Centers
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has
over 20,000 students each year that belong to diverse
cultures. From our Black, Native, and Latina/o students,
to our international population, these students are a
part of cultural houses that support their needs but
also offer opportunities for engagement.
The Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural
Center serves the Afro-American population offering
programs such as Food for the Soul, a weekly series
with discussion topics relevant to the African Diaspora.
La Casa Cultural Latina empowers Latina/o students
and offers events throughout the year with cultural
celebrations for Dia de los Muertos & Los Posadas, as
well as Dinner Dialogues with discussions for campus
and community.
In November, the Native American House celebrates
Native November with lectures, artist talks, and
workshops that support our Indigenous population.
With over 10,000 University of Illinois students of
Asian descent, the Asian American Cultural Center
celebrates many rich cultures. Diwali, a South Asian
festival of lights, is celebrated in autumn, lighting up
the Quad. The Lunar New Year engages the community
in our local schools, teaching about the cultural
significance and history of the holiday
CU Pride Fest
The largest pride celebration south of Chicago takes
place here in Urbana each fall when University of
Illinois students return to campus. From a parade
that winds its way downtown to drag shows and
family-friendly activities, the event from Uniting Pride
of Champaign County celebrates the LGBTQIA+
community and allies.
