eBook: Cell and Gene Therapy - 4

Accelerating the Bioeconomy by
Optimizing Cell Culture-Based
Therapeutics Production
A future based on living cells is taking shape with
bio-based therapeutics.
New drugs and therapies produced by bioproduction1
-the
production of biological products and
chemicals from living cells-are just one part of
the bigger picture of a future built on living cells.
By using cells derived from plants, animals, and
microorganisms to manufacture a wide variety of
chemicals and biological products, we have created
a thriving new economy: the bioeconomy.2
As
the focus of a 2022 White House executive order,3
this bioeconomy places bioprocesses front and
center for innovative solutions in healthcare, agriculture,
environmental sustainability, food security,
and energy production.
As with any economy, the success of this bioeconomy
depends on our ability to produce safe, effective
products at the scale required to meet market
demand. This is especially true when the product is
a therapeutic that will be introduced into patients'
bodies, unlike other consumables that do not directly
impact human health. The development of
cell and gene therapies, vaccines, and biologics
must be optimized and include rigorous quality
and safety testing to ensure the successful manufacture
of clinically and commercially viable products.
In this eBook, we explore several available
tools to address challenges and accelerate the bioproduction
of novel therapeutics.
Challenges in the production of
bio-based therapeutics
Although this bioeconomy was born in response
to our concerning dependence on nonrenewable
sources of energy,1
over the past two decades
we've grown to recognize that the bioeconomy is
built on any product developed by leveraging biological
resources.4
This includes cell and gene therapies,
vaccines, and biologics: the foundation of
the next generation of human medicines.
There are several challenges5 to producing safe
and effective therapies, many of which are directly
related to the fact that their manufacture depends
on cell cultures. Cell cultures require trained laboratory
technicians, are prone to contamination,
