eBook: New Frontiers in Infectious Disease Research - 11

Summary
References
Despite the advancements in vaccine production
since the discovery of the influenza virus, influenza
continues to impose a significant disease burden
on both humans and animals. In the past 80
years, MDCK cells have been increasingly utilized
by global scientific research institutions and laboratories
for influenza virus isolation, culture, and
laboratory diagnosis. Moreover, MDCK cells have
served as a passage cell line for vaccine production.
On the other hand, concerns have emerged
regarding their potential tumorigenicity and susceptibility
to contamination by exogenous factors.
As cell-based vaccines improve and influenza vaccine
production technology evolves, an eventual
total replacement of chicken egg-based vaccines
will nevertheless be a welcomed shift in the field.
