groundswell: Wonder winter wonderland Words: Dan Jordan H aving blazed its
way through the family tree of UK garage, drum 'n' bass and hip hop, while
tipping its hat to ol' grandpa punk, grime has spawned a new baby; dubstep.
Set to inherit the mantle of the sound of inner city London, it's less
instantly abrasive than its papa, with more pronounced reggae influences
and a greater use of FX. At the very forefront of this East London spore
is producer Wonder, who finally S explodes his new long player onto the
scene. Having remixed the likes of The Prodigy and Mercury Prize alternate
darling Dizzee Rascal, Wonder is well versed in the pantheon of rude bwoy
sub bass and hoodie semantics. As founding member of grime protagonists
Roll Deep now making gover nment-backed anti-gun campaign videos , Wonder
has been a prime mover in the East End scene since its gritty inception.
Ear ning his stripes in the moody underworld of pirate radio stations,
Wonder has the credentials to ensnare the listener with real life
forefront pressures, seething green light instrumentals sitting alongside
rapid fire hyper-lyricism kano, Sway and street soul vocals Gemma Fox set
to a bounce of half time rhythms. His `Welcome To Wonderland' debut could
be the catapult into mass consciousness dubstep deserves. `Welcome To
Wonderland' is on Dump Valve. 06 well Music
