Center named to Becker's
Hospital Review's 2023 Great
Hospitals in America List
Dartmouth Health's Dartmouth Hitchcock
Medical Center (DHMC), New Hampshire's only
academic medical center and Level 1 trauma
center, has been named to Becker's Hospital
Review's annual ranking of Great Hospitals in
America. DHMC was one of only three hospitals
in New England included on the list, and the
only hospital in New Hampshire and northern
New England. Hospitals included on this list are
renowned for clinical excellence, patient safety,
innovation efforts, research and education,
patient satisfaction and more.
" Being included on Becker's list of the
country's best hospitals, in the company of many
internationally renowned medical centers, is not
only a great honor but a validation that we are
succeeding in delivering the level of excellence
our communities deserve, " said Susan A. Reeves,
EdD, RN, executive vice president of DHMC. " I am

What's it like to wear a
continuous glucose monitor?
A diabetes clinic in Primary Care
provides chronic disease education
to patients and APD providers
It was eye-opening for Alice Peck Day's primary care
providers like Margot Stephens, MD, to wear a continuous
glucose monitor (CGM).
" Our providers wore CGMs to learn what it is like to
be a patient with diabetes, " says Joanne Hayes, a nurse
practitioner, Certified Diabetes Care and Education
Specialist, and director of APD's Diabetes Clinic. " They were
able to see the data and learn how to analyze it. "
Diabetes, an endocrine disease that affects the way the
body uses blood sugar, is one of the dominant chronic
conditions in the United States. According to the CDC,

American Heart Association Get With The
Guidelines® quality achievement awards for
Resuscitation and Stroke for its commitment
to treating in-hospital cardiac arrest and stroke,
ultimately helping to improve survival rates.
DHMC received Resuscitation Gold Adult
Population and Resuscitation Gold Pediatric
Population awards. For stroke, DHMC received
the Stroke Gold Plus with Target: Stroke Honor
Roll Elite, and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.
approximately 49% of adults have diabetes or prediabetes.
" As one of its first goals, the Diabetes Clinic offered
an educational series for primary care providers on the
complexities and challenges of diabetes care, " Hayes says.
" The topics included medications, overcoming inertia and
using technologies, like the CGM. Diabetes treatment and
care has greatly evolved over the last 100 years when
insulin was first used. Now it includes oral and injectable
medicines as well as incredible technology. "
With the support of a grant, the Diabetes Clinic in APD's
Primary Care has had 100 referrals and seen more than
200 patients in just six months.
" Now we can do this. We can offer every patient access
to good diabetes care either with their primary care
provider or through the diabetes clinic, " Hayes said.

me more conscious
about what I eat,
made me respect
my pancreas! As
a non-diabetic, I
could see what is
a (presumably)
normal response to
a meal, to exercise
and to sleep. Also,
I learned some
details on meds we
use, a bit about diet
suggestions, and the
importance of going
after the A1c target
aggressively and
quickly. "
