> WHAT'S COOKING?
International meals at APD
German borscht? Not the usual kind of soup on a hospital cafeteria menu here
in northern New England, but there it was on the menu of Alice's Café at Alice Peck
Day Memorial Hospital. " People loved it, " says Shawn Richardson, the hospital's
director of Nutrition Services.
The beety borscht was just one of the international dishes served up at the café
during an 8-month period in 2022. There were also dishes from Italy, Guatemala, El
Salvador, the Philippines, Jamaica, Poland, Sweden and Afghanistan.
It was an idea, um, cooked up by Richardson and Alisha Robinson, DEI
program coordinator at APD. The two felt that, with so many traveling nurses and
employees from other countries, it would be a good way to learn about each
other's cultures and, as Richardson puts it, be " an icebreaker. "
When a country's flag went up in the café, employees knew that country's
cuisine would be represented on the menu. It was a different country every
month; once or twice a week in that month its cuisine would be the main meal.
" It all went over very well, " says Richardson. " People came into the kitchen
to talk about it. They were giving me recipes. " They were also asking that the
international meals be continued in some way. And they have been.
Aside from the ongoing menus that reflect the healthy Mediterranean-style diet,
the café's offerings have included a number of meals from other cultures. Among
the most popular, Japanese teppanyaki, Jamaican pork curry and a Filipino
sausage dish called " sisig. "
Richardson says he's up for doing the international menu months again. " It was
a lot of fun. "
> CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
A recognition of
social justice work
Starting in this month of February, Dartmouth Health
employees have a chance to officially recognize people
in our New Hampshire and Vermont communities who
are working toward social justice. Nominations for the
1st Annual Community Impact Social Justice Awards
(CISJA) are underway.
The awards were developed by the Black, Indigenous,
and People of Color Employee Resource Group (BIPOC
ERG), which works to promote belonging, safety and
unity by relationship building and contributing to the
community in meaningful ways. This recognition of
social justice work is being done in honor of Black
leaders who paved the way to create a world in which all
people have the opportunity to thrive. Winners will be
celebrated at a ceremony on April 29, 2023 in Concord.
The three categories for the CISJA nominations
include a Dartmouth Health employee, a community
member, and a youth community member. The
nomination criteria are:
* Actively engaged in demonstrated social justice
action aimed at making the lives of others and/or
communities better
* Engaged in empowerment of marginalized
individuals and/or communities
* Engaged in community organizing and systems
change that promote human rights and social
justice action
* Demonstrated evidence of ongoing inclusive
change in the community/communities within
which the individual(s) work
Nominations can be submitted online
from now until Tuesday, March 21.
Limited tickets to the award celebration
are available, ranging from $10 to $35,
and can be purchased here.
