here are several things about
Dartmouth Health telepharmacist
Sheryl Gamble, PharmD, that
make her unique. She is a remote
employee who works from her home office
in St. Augustine, FL, she prefers the overnight
shift, and she and her husband are the owner/
operators of Veterans United Craft Brewery,
the second-largest production brewery in
northeast Florida, which is focused on
helping veterans.
She works when most people are
asleep, and says, " The nights may be long
at times, but I love it. I can't imagine doing
anything else. "
Her husband Ron's journey to create
the brewery began in 1999. " Ron's interest in
brewing started with a beer kit I had gotten
him as a gift, " Sheryl says. " I also got him a few
good beer brewing books, and he just went
to town on it. " Over the years, he went from
home brewer to professional brewer, receiving
training at Chicago's Siebel Institute, Doemens
Academy in Munich and with brewmasters in
New England. Veterans United was founded in
2013 after they moved to Florida.
Sheryl has worked at Dartmouth Health's
TelePharmacy for three years, helping her
husband build the brewery business in her
off hours. It is named Veterans United Craft
Brewery because it is a veteran-owned and
-operated production facility that employs
mostly veterans for positions in brewery
operations, accounting, sales and staffing
the taproom. The beer is also available in
numerous restaurants, bars, hotels, and
grocery and package stores.
While her husband runs the business,
Sheryl contributes artwork for the taproom
and manages its social media presence. She
also plays a part in naming the " for cause "
beers that are released weekly. For example,
WatchStander IPA is named for a group
working to prevent veteran suicide, and
POW/MIA IPA raises awareness for a POW/
MIA national memorial. They also produced
a D-Day IPA in collaboration with a brewery
in Normandy, France. Sheryl says, " We want
to be involved in the military and veteran
community to help any way we can. It's
important to remember, honor and respect
veterans-the very people who fight for our
freedom. "
Her commitment to veterans runs deep.
Her father was a Navy pilot from 1958 to 1978,
deployed on aircraft carriers seven times,
three of them during the Vietnam War. Ron
was a naval flight officer, who conducted
missions over Iraq during the Gulf War. Every
generation of his family has served in the
military as far back as the Spanish American
War. " I'm not a veteran, " Sheryl says, " but I'm a
X2 dependent and a huge supporter. "
The brewery's motto is: In the Service
of Great Beer. " We take the same pride and
passion people had serving our country and
put this into brewing and serving the best
beers possible, " Sheryl says. " That's a universal
feeling among all who have served-the pride
and passion. "
