If you get sick or injured during a winter
weekend at Vermont's Mount Snow resort, there's help
nearby. It's called Mountain Medical Services, a walk-in clinic
located at the base of the mountain. Owned and operated
by Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) and
staffed by Dartmouth Hitchcock Clinic physicians, it's a
significant benefit for the skiers, snowboarders and visitors
who go to Mount Snow, and for those who live in the area.
" Finding medical care on weekends is a challenge, " says
Trey Dobson, MD, chief medical officer at SVMC. With
Mountain Medical Services operating throughout the ski
season, from late November through the end of March,
there is clinical staff on-site at Mount Snow to treat urgent
conditions like broken bones and sprains due to ski injuries,
as well as other emergencies and illnesses.
Dobson says the clinic, which is open 9 am to 4 pm
on Saturdays and Sundays and on major holidays,
has advanced digital radiographic (X-ray) equipment
operated by certified technicians and interpreted in real
time by SVMC radiologists. Point-of-care lab testing for
certain illnesses, such as strep throat and influenza, is
available as well.
Because finding weekend medical care is a challenge
for everyone, not just skiers, the clinic provides care to
local residents throughout the region. " We want families
and residents of Deerfield Valley to be aware of this walk-in
service, " Dobson says.
