W
ith a growing city it is important to ensure that
both fire services and medical services can
reach everyone in adequate time. Since most
of the current stations are located closer to the
centre of the city and the growth is happening on the edges,
we want to ensure that the new areas are still just as accessible.
We performed a service area analysis to check how
well the current services cover Lethbridge. We found that the
west side severely lacked access to ambulances. The top of
the north side lacked fire services. A density analysis was
performed to find which city side had the highest person/km
density. This was done to try and find which city side could
more efficiently be serviced. The west side by far had the
higher density. Using all fire incident points since late 2017
we performed a kernel density to find the local hot spots. The
city centre had a huge cluster. As well, the north side had a
high amount of clustering throughout. Using the density and
medical service time analysis, we proposed a new medical
station in the fire station of Whoop-Up Drive West. Using the
kernel density and fire service time analysis we proposed a
fire station up north by the legacy neighbourhood. Both these
proposed sites would highly increase the service coverage
across Lethbridge.
SCOTT POLEC: I was born in Rocky Mountain House, but
spent my life in Medicine Hat. During school, I found a love
for two things: Karate and STEM. I learned about the geomatics
program at Lethbridge College while attending a college
fair, and decided to take that path. I attained my black belt
just before heading to Lethbridge. Despite the challenges of
spending our first college year during a pandemic online, as
a class we maintained our relationship by creating a virtual
team chat to help each other.
I really found my love for GIS through our many GIS classes.
We found a topic we knew could impact an entire community
and used our GIS skills to create a map that could be easily
understood and would provide a deeper insight into an important
aspect of our lives. As college was coming to an end
I decided to move back to Medicine Hat. I now work as a CAD
drafting technician at Midwest Surveys in Medicine Hat, have
become a technologist-in-training with ASET, and have gone
back to karate to further my skills.
JAXSON KOPP: I am a recent graduate of the geomatics
engineering technology program at Lethbridge College. My
journey in the geomatics industry has been a busy but very
enjoyable process where I learn new things daily. Currently I
reside in Lethbridge, where I participate in legal land surveying
services at Brown Okamura & Associates Ltd.
JEFF PLOWMAN: I am a junior party chief at Mike Spencer
Geometrics in Lethbridge, Alberta. I have worked for them
part time since March 2021, and have been a full-time employee
since graduating from the geomatics engineering
technology program at Lethbridge College in April 2022. I am
currently managing the field work portion of a large wind farm
project located just outside of Hilda, Alberta.
