As a continuing feature of Technology Alberta, ASET is collecting stories about our members and the creative or
community-based activities in which they engage outside the workplace. ASET members are technical professionals,
but they also apply their superior analysis and problem-solving abilities to the creation of artistic works, and to finding
solutions that address our needs within the wider community.

Using Personal and Professional
Experiences to Create Novels
A glance into the life and work of Tony May, C.E.T.
As a technology professional, Tony May, C.E.T., has worked
across the world on projects primarily within the oil and gas
industry. Tony used the resulting wide range of personal
and professional experiences to help pursue his passion for
writing.
Growing up in Calgary, Tony graduated from the Welding
Engineering Technology program at SAIT, and eventually
became an ASET member in 1983. He credits his certification with opening the door to a career in professional management for industry leaders in oil and gas. With his unique
technical and managerial expertise, he travelled the world
throughout his career working on construction and welding projects in Kuwait, Indonesia, and Thailand. Those opportunities exposed him to a variety of environments and
experiences, many which would serve as the foundation for
the novels he has produced.
His first book, Rig Pigs, was based on his experiences after
his brother died while working on the rigs. In subsequent
releases, he drew on his history as an FBI informant relating
to corruption on the project he worked on in Bangkok, his
experiences working on the Kuwait Fires Project, his personal love for rodeos, and his interest in the opioid crisis
and other contemporary problems. Knowing his creativity
for writing comes from the world around him, Tony is always
looking for inspiration to help fuel his next book.

fortunate to have been able
to use those experiences to
develop stories with such a
unique perspective."
