Message from
the President
Wade Weaver,
P.Tech.(Eng.), B.Tech., PMP
WADE WEAVER is ASET's 2022-2023 president. In his
first member message, he's taken the time to answer a few
questions about ASET and his presidency.
What is your history as a member with ASET?
I first became a member of ASET in 2007 after accepting a
job in which my employer required me to get certified. A few
years later, after obtaining my C.E.T. and then my P.Tech.(Eng.)
I began volunteering with ASET, doing presentations at some
of the colleges in 2014. After a few years of volunteering, I
joined Council in 2018, which has been a great experience.
What is your history as a technology professional
in Alberta?
Before going to Lethbridge College in 2005 to take the civil
program, I worked in the road construction industry for
about five years, and enjoyed seeing projects go from plans
to completion.
I realized I wanted to further my career, and chose the twoyear
civil program. I didn't realize what I had signed up for,
as this program was one of the most intense periods of my
life. I enjoyed diving right into the practical theory, and was
able to apply my education immediately.
Why did you choose to run for ASET president?
When I ran for 2nd vice-president in 2020 before the global
pandemic, we hadn't been in our legislative review. At the
time I thought I understood the main issues at play for ASET,
and wanted to give back by contributing to our profession
and seeing it grow. I have since gained a further understanding
of the issues here in Alberta and across Canada, by being
involved in Technology Professionals Canada (TPC).
What are your main goals during your tenure as
ASET president?
We have a few priorities as we come out of the pandemic.
The first priority is to see the Professional Governance Act
through legislative review in the fall. I know this is frustrating
for members wondering why we are constantly talking
about this issue with little results - with a few stakeholders
at play and ultimately in the hands of our government.
I have found things don't move as fast as we technologists
and technicians are used to seeing. Our members can have
a significant impact in understanding this issue and openly
discussing it with coworkers and your local MLAs. Our Past
President Kevin Whelan did a great job of highlighting these
issues in the magazine's Winter 2021 issue.
Our second priority is to restart initiatives that were shelved
because of the pandemic. This includes getting our volunteer
programs going again, meeting with future members at
our local colleges, and doing membership events. We also
need to continue to work on supporting members applying
for certification, and advocating on all the ways ASET
is available.
What are you most excited for as you step into
this role?
We have emerged from the pandemic, and from talking to
members it appears we are well on the road to recovery. I'm
most excited to meet with the members and see the Professional
Governance Act pass legislation, which is when our
work to hammer out the details will start.
