A few decades later, consumers buying VCRs was considered the end of movie theatres. More recently, as the last millenium drew to a close, we heard the Internet would soon put an end to publishing as we know it. Printers would no longer be required to apply ink to paper as readers would instead visit their favourite websites for information. None of that has happened. Radio has re-invented itself in several forms. VCRs have actually dropped off the landscape, supplanted by DVD players and digital recorders, while Hollywood continues to grind out movies that play first in theatres. As for the printed word, newspapers do admit to declining readership of their printed versions as more people consume their news online. Interestingly enough, however, magazines like The Milk Producer, catering to specific groups of readers, have actually registered growth. That’s not to say the Internet hasn’t impacted the magazine industry. Indeed, most magazines have websites. For several years, our site has been tucked into a corner of the Dairy Farmers of Ontario website. You could find us easily enough, but we offered you only a rather large PDF file that you could download onto your computer. Our publication has grown and uses more graphics these days. This has meant posting a really large PDF file, or downgrading the overall quality of what you see on your computer monitor. Given the choice between two poor options, we downgraded quality to keep files at a fairly reasonable size. Still, choosing the lesser of two evils is hardly a good solution. So, for the last few years we’ve been searching for a technology that would suit our publication. Last spring, we found it, and are rolling it out with our November issue. To find us, head for www.milk.org. Click on Farmers and then on Publications. You’ll see an icon below. One more click will take you to our new digital edition. Reading it online is much like reading a magazine printed on paper. Simply click on a corner to turn a page. You can also adjust the print size easily. We do caution readers still using dial-up internet connections against trying to access the new edition. You need a high-speed service. I doubt many of you would have bothered with our old PDF format either. Downloading it would have taken more time than most people would be willing to invest. But, fear not. Your printed version will still arrive as usual in your mailbox. For now, we will continue servicing all readers on our mailing list with a printed edition. However, times and technology change. We want to be ready to serve you the best way we can, and there is no time like the present to start preparing for the future. 4 | November 2008 | MilkPRODUCER
