NEW’N’NOTED Whale fins mimicked to increase efficiency Lely takes Next big robot step Lely Astronaut A3 Next Altra-Air ceiling fans Envira-North Systems has unveiled a new line of high-volume, low-speed (HVLS) Altra-Air fans incorporating WhalePower’s revolutionary Tubercle Technology. Envira-North Systems teamed with a Toronto-based company WhalePower to bring the technology to the marketplace. The tubercle effect is an example of biomimicry— advanced engineering that mimics the bumps on the leading edge of Humpback whale flippers which has evolved through a million years of field tests. The new Altra-Air fans feature a five-bladed design, and qualify for several energy-efficient incentives for both new builds and retrofits, which can reduce the cost of the fan by more than 70 per cent. “Our Altra-Air ceiling fans can move more air than ever before and can do it using 20 per cent less electricity,” says Envira-North president, Dan Lambert. The fans come in sizes from eight to 24 feet and have variable speed operation. “These new fans destratify the air more efficiently. That means they even out the temperature in any big space and make it a lot more comfortable,” says chief operating officer, Monica Bowden. T he Lely Astronaut A3 Next further improves the Lely Astronaut A3, automated milking system. It features a new design, and cleaning and servicing will be easier. In addition to these improvements, the robot’s management system—Lely T4C, Time 4 Cows—has been further advanced. It now includes dynamic feeding and milking. It takes into account the individual animals’ response, in terms of milk production, to the concentrate provided or milk intervals. Individual cow health increases, while concentrate costs are reduced and robot utilization is optimized. Lely mounted the milk quality sensor system in the unique Astronaut arm, resulting in faster and even more accurate detection and measuring of the milk flow. Also perfected is the milk quality control system, which was already the first available online method to determine somatic cell count per quarter. The milk separation system is now disengaged from the robotic milking system and can be mounted on the most convenient place for the farmer. The improved milking robot is compatible with the existing Lely Astronaut A3. “The Lely Astronaut A3 Next consumes significantly less energy and water than competitive brands,” says Aart van’t Land, Lely’s vice-president, dairy equipment. “By paying attention to energy costs, we are also able to introduce an outstandingly sustainable product. “Our unique service contracts allow farmers to opt for a truly transparent, all-inclusive contract, which is unique in today’s marketplace. Payment is based on the number of milkings, so pay as you use. The use of first-class materials, combined with a limited number of moving parts, guarantees a long lifetime and a significantly higher trade-in value.
