NEW’N’NOTED Calf care innovations featured at farm show Dairy education gets a boost Research results will be on display. Crops won’t be the only thing growing at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show this year. Several crops of calves are sprouting over the summer at the Grober Young Animal Development Centre. Grober Nutrition opened the doors to the GYADC this spring with 80 calves. Research is being conducted on nutrition programs, housing systems, bedding and calf-rearing technologies. “The Grober Young Animal Development Centre stemmed from our company’s commitment to the industry,” says Heather Copland, Grober Nutrition’s marketing and communications manager. “We know that calves are the foundation of a strong dairy network and want to highlight to the industry the opportunities in calf development.” Grober is the only milk replacer company with its own research centre and the only facility to feature both individual and group housed calves. Individual penning is supplied by AgriPlastics. Grober is also working with FörsterTechnik, the leading manufacturer of automatic calf feeding systems, as well as other industry suppliers. Ontario Harvestore has donated a new silo and unloader to Ridgetown college. T he Dairy Education Centre at the University of Guelph’s Ridgetown Campus has long been an important place for learning, and Ontario Harvestore Systems president Glen Gregory, class of 1965, wants to ensure students can keep learning in this unique classroom. To that end, Ontario Harvestore made an in-kind donation of a new silo and unloader. “I want students to learn about farm safety, feed quality in relation to milk production, precision feeding and all aspects of dairy production during their studies at Ridgetown,” says Gregory. “We’re very pleased to help post-secondary education in this capacity.” “Previous silo storage units on campus did not provide enough capacity to meet the campus’ feed storage needs,” says Art Schaafsma, campus director. “The new silo and silo unloader will improve feed storage, enhance feed quality and improve feeding efficiency at the dairy education centre.” The silo project is the first significant step in working with producers and industry to ensure a top-notch teaching herd and facility for current and future agriculture students interested in pursuing dairy industry careers, he says.
