Contact Heather Hargrave at 519-837-1326 or heather@ofac.org Sculpture Joe Fafard and his creations. olstein Canada recently unveiled a bronze, life-size sculpture of a dairy cow and calf by internationally renowned Canadian sculpture Joe Fafard during a special ceremony at its head office in Brantford, Ont. The sculpture was commissioned to portray Canadian dairy breeder commitment to excellence, draw attention to the animals’ beauty, and recognize the dairy cow’s contribution to human health. The cow represents Canada’s dairy herd ancestry, while the calf symbolizes youth and continuous breed improvement. Both are on permanent display at the national head office. Fafard has participated in numerous exhibits across Canada and around the world. (See Fafard’s artwork in Back Forty, August 2008.) 18 | August 2009 | MilkPRODUCER H Eastern Ontario Junior Show expands youth focus The first Eastern Ontario Junior Show, hosted by Holstein Ontario, 4-H Ontario and Eastern Breeders Inc. (EBI), in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the EBI 4-H Showcase, was a resounding success. Close to 125 youth, ages 10 through 21, took part in the three-day event at Spencerville Fairgrounds. Younger participants gained valuable skills and showing expertise, including learning about pedigrees, feeding their calves and how to prepare for a show. Older 4-H members got to hone their leadership skills by mentoring younger participants. The weekend also included judging and farm safety challenges.
