THEBACKFORTY By Sharon Laidlaw I do, with plenty of cheese American cheese sculpture and navy vet tie the knot surrounded by none else but cheese C ulinary artist Sarah Kaufmann, better known as The Cheese Lady, makes her living carving unique cheese sculptures. A former graphic artist and creative director for the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, Kaufmann knows a thing or two about promoting her favourite food. Her recent nuptials to a navy veteran give the term cheesy wedding a whole new meaning. Determined to make her special day unique, Kaufmann carved a Jolly Roger wedding cake—complete with skull and crossbones and heart motifs—made of Monterrey Jack cheese and Wisconsin cheddar. She even gave her guests cheese-carved invitations. “We met because of cheese and everything we do is because of cheese,” Kaufmann said. “Even our wedding rings were designed to look like cheese, bands of gold with cheese dimples and holes.” A seasoned food marketer, Kaufmann uses a variety of cheeses to carve her sculptures, most often working with mild golden or white Cheddar in a range of shapes and sizes. She has carved 10- and 40pound blocks to 500-pound wheels and even a 12,500-pound cheddar. Kaufmann has sculpted several popular American television personalities, as well as a life-size astronaut to commemorate this year’s 40th anniversary of man landing on the moon. Saskatchewan Roughriders down chocolate milk after practice In the last few months, we’ve read and heard many scientific reports about the benefits of drinking chocolate milk after strenuous activity. The Saskatchewan Roughriders have adopted the practice to replenish players’ energy levels during their practices. Several studies indicate chocolate milk better helps replenish hydration levels than other sports drinks. And, study shows drinking milk may help you live longer Children who consume plenty of dairy foods such as milk and cheese can expect to live longer, a study suggests. A total 4,374 United Kingdom children from a 1930s study were traced 65 years later by researchers in Bristol and Queensland. Those who consumed a high amount of dairy and calcium as children were protected against stroke and other causes of death, the Heart journal reports. The study looked at family diets and found higher calcium and dairy intakes, mostly from milk, cut mortality by a quarter. A higher daily calcium intake of at least 400 mg of milk cut the risk of dying from stroke by as much as 60 per cent.
