INDUSTRYROUNDUP Farm exhibit makes debut Interactive components let visitors get a personal look at what’s cool and new with farming hat took almost two years to develop has come to fruition. The Ontario Farm Animal Council’s (OFAC) new interactive exhibit, FarmzOnWheelz, recently debuted at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). The $950,000 project, including gold sponsorship from Dairy Farmers of Ontario, is the first of its kind in Canada. W Know Food video, a special component of the exhibit. The video showcases many aspects of Canadian farming and farm families. The exhibit will also be at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in November. Money raised to help feed poor Ontario farmers and the Ontario Association of Food Banks (OAFB) have again joined forces to fight hunger with the second annual Harvest Gala to celebrate Ontario’s bounty and raise funds to buy food for people in need. “Last year’s inaugural Harvest Gala was an overwhelmingly positive event,” says chicken farmer and OFAC chair John Maaskant. “We invite anyone who has an interest in food or farming to come to the gala. It is a great opportunity to network with others who work in agriculture, and all for a good cause to help the food banks.” The 2009 Harvest Gala will take place Oct. 22 in the Delta Guelph Ballroom. It will feature gourmet Ontario foods, wine and beer, a wine tasting station and live entertainment. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and gourmet tasting stations at 7 p.m. OFAC will also launch the 2010 Faces of Farming calendar. Tickets cost $125, with a $25 charitable receipt to the OAFB. Forage expertise at conference The 2009 Forage Focus conference, hosted by the Ontario Forage Council, is set to take place on Dec. 1 in Napanee and Dec. 2 in Shakespeare. It will focus on making quality forage and hay marketing. Dr. David Combs, University of Wisconsin professor, department of dairy science, will speak about grazing and forage testing development. Representatives of sponsoring organizations, including DFO general manager Peter Gould (left), were on hand at the CNE to officially open the new FarmzOnWheelz exhibit. Designed and built by the Ontario Science Centre, FarmzOnWheelz lets teens get an up-close-and-personal look at what’s cool about farming. Visitors making their way through the 400-square-foot exhibit can explore its interactive components and experience how science and technology impact agriculture.
