THEBACKFORTY By Sharon Laidlaw Have milk, be slim Milk and milk products not just for healthy teeth and bones, your waistline could benefit too L ooking to trim a little off your waistline? It may be as simple as reaching into your fridge for a few servings of yogurt. Several Winnipeg scientists are testing whether consuming at least four servings of low-fat milk and yogurt a day can help people trim their waistlines and lose weight. Eighty people are participating in a provincially funded year-long study. The scientists are also collaborating with researchers in South Australia who are conducting an identical trial. The Canada Food Guide recommends adults consume two to three servings of milk or alternatives daily. However, the average Canadian has only 1.2 servings. Certain whey protein fragments, called peptides, found in dairy products may help speed the body’s metabolism. The researchers want to extract these fragments to create new functional foods, including fortified milk or yogurt. They believe replacing less healthy beverages and snacks with low-fat milk and yogurt will help the participants lose weight and belly fat. The study follows trials involving obese people in Tennessee and Minnesota where dairy products substituted for other foods resulted in significant weight loss.
